Glazing and energy consumption
Choosing between single, double, triple or low e-coating glazed windows is a big decision to make when replacing the windows in your home. We recommend triple or low e-coating glazed windows. Double glazed windows are two panes of glass separated by a vacuum or gas filled space to reduce heat loss. Triple glazed windows are three panes of glass separated by a vacuum or gas filled space to reduce heat loss. Low e-coating is a thin microscopic transparent layer that reflects long wave heat. Some low e-coatings also reflect short wave heat. When the heat tries to escape from inside to the outside during colder months, the low e-coating reflects the heat back in, reducing heat loss. The reverse occurs during the warmer months. Choosing a window that will reduce heat loss will in turn result in a lower energy bill, as mentioned above.
Each window glazing has a U value. A window’s U value measures how effective its material is as an insulator. The lower the U-value, the better an insulator the material is. More effective insulating materials in your home leads to both lower heating and energy costs. Below is a comparison:
